Promotion of the best practices (cop 26)
The DRC is counted among the 16 countries in the world qualified to be called a mega biodiversity. Its surface area of 2,345,000 km² and its forests with an important biological diversity. They cover nearly 67% of the national area. The efforts made by the D.R.Congo to reach these goals are mainly aimed at reducing deforestation and forest degradation level, as well as to the conservation and sustainable management of the biodiversity of the region.
As far as Kongo Central is concerned, our interest lies in the Mayombe forest which is located in the Lower River District.

It runs along the right side of the Congo River. It extends from the north of Boma, towards the enclave of Cabinda in Angola, towards the west and extends to the north towards the Republic of Congo (Congo Brazzaville) and Gabon.
This forest goes through four territories of the Bas-fleuve and Boma, namely: Lukula, Seke-Banza, Muanda and Tshela.
The forests of Mayombe have a rich and diverse flora. In spite of degradation, there is still in some parts, an important floristic richness, essentially where the forest is not strongly degraded; that is to say, in the sector of Maduda and Nganda – Nsundi in the territory of Tshela where one finds the mountain of Madia- Koko planned to shelter a transborder reserve.
In addition to this, the 33,000 hectare Luki Biosphere Reserve is the southernmost tip of an ancient primary forest and has been classified as a biosphere reserve by UNESCO since 1976.
It has the greatest diversity of flora, including several commercial species such as Limba, Iroko, Tola, etc.
The Mayombe forest is also home to the Mangrove Marine Park (PMM) which has a characteristic flora with species such as the Black Mangrove and Racemosa Germinans.

The forests of Mayombe were once rich in wildlife. However, its degradation due to the increase of the population has affected the animals population in the area.

At the present moment, only the Luki Biosphere Reserve still contains a more or less representative sample of this fauna, despite the threats to this UNESCO MAB (Man and Biosphere) reserve.
